Crash Landing

[The first thing he noticed was the air rushing around him. It was a bad feeling. A falling feeling, he'd felt before and like those times, he knew it'd bring change. With reluctance he opened his eyes and immediately wished he hadn't. The ground leapt up at him eager to meet him, a sentiment he did not share.

Bracing himself for impact, he was surprised to find he felt none. Though the crater that existed around him was certainly evidence that there had been one. After examining himself for any injury and finding none, Flint proceeded to crawl out of the crater and could see around him other points of impact that presumably had their own inhabitants. Even as he looked up he could see that some were still making landfall.

Unable to think of a better plan on his own, he decided to check on his neighbor by investigating the nearest crater.

tentatively:
] Hello? Is anyone in need of assistance down there?

Aftermath

[Curiouser and curiouser the events of the day have left Flint dazed and confused. It's in that state that he finds himself listening to the speech of man called Atomight that explains the events that just occurred while ridiculous are not that unusual in this world. That is a thought that rattles around Flints mind without settling in. THIS WORLD. Which is apparently different than MY world he thinks glumly. A stranger in a strange land, typical for me really.

Upon cessation of the speech he finds himself whisked away to another room. A banquet hall and for the first time since arrival, he finds himself hungry. Flint moves to the table and begins to sample the food while looking around for someone that may seem familiar or of his world. Unaccustomed as he was to such gatherings and with his mind still reeling from the events of the day, he found himself jostling a fellow attendee. Quick to recover, he deftly caught the person's falling cutlery before it hit the ground and looked up into the eyes of its owner. Ruefully:
] My apologies for the intrusion. I believe you dropped this.

Character Name: Flint Carsen
Character Canon: Original
Character Age: 20
Canon Point: Shortly after returning from the Underdark
Link to History: Flint grew up as an only child to a human father and orc mother. He was baker from a prestigious guild and she was the mercenary that saved his caravan from a bandit attack. From then on they were inseparable and settled in his home and had Flint. As the city was mostly made of humans and dwarves, he faced prejudice from an early age and so spent most of his days in quiet and exploring the hidden parts of the city.

On one such fateful day he was exploring a condemned building in an older, poorer quarter of town when the masonry gave way beneath his feet and he plummeted several floors below the city. Little did he know then that his life would become defined by such serendipitous events. Miraculously unscathed, he discovered that the city in which he lived was, for the most part, built on itself. In the time since its founding the city had sunk and new layers kept being added to the top. After this discovery Flint spent most of his youth digging through the city and marveling at what had been. His meticulous notes and maps of the undercity eventually earned him the notice of a local scholar from the city's University and so began Flint's introduction to the profession of archaeology. With official sanction from the University his actions were reclassified from vandalism to official research.

The next turning point in his life occured on one such expedition. Having been emboldened by recent successes Flint decided to navigate a particularly tricky part of the undercity that was older than the rest and possibly predated the founding of the city he knew. Owing to its age the area he explored collapsed and Flint once again found himself falling into an unknown part of the city, but this time he would not remain unhurt. The fall shattered his legs and he lay there for some time cursing his own foolishness. In time though self-reproach gave way to curiosity as he found himself in a cavern with depictions and writing unlike any he had seen before including a Runic Script whose very writing seemed to shape the magic around it.

To Flint's delight a few hours of study netted him a rune that could be used to reverse damage caused to a person or object. As he proceeded to invoke the rune, he realized, to his horror, that the rune did not actually reverse damage, but instead transferred it. This meant the damage to his legs was transposed to the mural around him and resulted in its destruction. While the rune had saved him, Flint feared the cost may have been too high in relation to the potential knowledge lost and vowed to take greater care in his life to avoid repeating the mistakes of this expedition.

Over the next few years Flint would continue his city exploration, but would always be drawn back to the cavern he had destroyed in an effort to sift out new knowledge from the wreck his actions had caused. In time he was able to puzzle out a piece that spoke of a place of power just outside the city walls. To his disappointment when he arrived at the noted location, Flint found a fully working mining operation had taken over the area. Not wishing to pass up the chance to acquire knowledge of a civilization previously unknown, he joined the mining company as a chef in the kitchens. The job was easy to come by owing to the tutelage his father had given him regarding the culinary arts. In his downtime, Flint would explore the mines and try to piece together the location of the place of power.

Less than a month into working at the mining company, Flint was captured along with a number of his colleagues from the mine by Drow Slavers. After a brief imprisonment, the motley band of characters managed to stage a prison break and spent the next few months exploring the Underdark, evading capture, quarreling with the cultists of a dark god, and just generally doing their best to survive an environment antithetical to life. During this time serendipity struck again and the crew stumbled upon the place of power that Flint had been searching for. Unfortunately not much time could be spent there without risking capture, but Flint was able to discern a rune that he believed could be used to restore the mural he had destroyed. A few adventures later, and with a brand new best friend in the form of a pack lizard, Flint and his companions emerged from the Underdark tired, scarred, but most important of all, alive. Bidding farewell to his companions, Flint returned home to recover from the ordeal. Once healthy and whole, he returned to the broken mural under the city and attempted to invoke the rune he had found in the Underdark. Like before, he had miscalculated and found the rune activated a hidden function of the cavern. Flint found himself overwhelmed by a strange, strong light and a feeling of fading before losing consciousness. He now awakes in a world wholly unfamiliar to him.
Inventory: What items will your character have with them? Do not feel obligated to note worn items unless they have a special ability.
Powers —
Spelunking equipment, pickaxe, cartography tools, a giant lizard.
Skills:
1. Trained in combat by mercenary mother
2. Cartography - maps are a particular hobby, both making and collecting. Some people paint landscapes, Flint makes highly detailed, accurate maps
3. Cooking - owing to his father's influence Flint grew up with a solid understanding of the culinary arts
4. Archaeology - Flint attended his city's university to study the techniques of excavation and preservation of old timey materials
Superpowers:
1. Rune Magic (canon power) - Flint has rudimentary knowledge of a form of magic that relies on runes. While Flint is from Dungeons and Dragons, in this case I envision this working more like Luz Noceda's rune magic from The Owl House, where she can inscribe a rune on a material and have the magic take effect. So far he only has the ability to transpose damage from a person/object to another person/object, but I would like for him to develop that in game, maybe learning things like a rune that makes things fire proof, a rune that locks doors, one that unlocks things. Mostly minor affects that involve altering the properties of objects.
2. Energy Constructs (new power) - He will find he has the ability to generate constructs of pure force in the form of armor and shields. For example, he can create a translucent dome of about 5x5 feet, which can block damage, but is not unbreakable and can be shattered with enough force. Additionally, effects like heat and radiation would still get through them. So while they could block flames, they could not block the actual heat from the flames.
3. Aligist (new power) - He will be able to read, write, speak, and understand any language he encounters. This does not allow him to decrypt ciphers, speak with non-sentient creatures, or understand non-verbal languages such as signing.
Limitations: While above a normal human in strength and endurance he is still mortal able to be harmed by normal means.
Personality —
Please EITHER (1) Summarize your character's personality — including motivations, behaviors, and psychology — in 300-600 words OR (2) Respond to the questions below.

  • What were your character's most formative experiences?:
  • a. The discovery of the Undercity, as it put Flint on the path that would shape the rest of his life. It also became the place that he would spend his formative years and where his fascination with the past and love of solitude began.
    b. Admission to the University. For the first time, Flint met people with similar interests to his own and tentatively made his first friends. Having always been an outsider, Flint found himself obsessed with the knowledge to be found in the University's library and sought answers for why the world today by examining the past.
    c. The discovery of the underground chamber and its rune magic, and the depictions of a civilization that stood long before the city. In this discovery he realized the impermanence of all things. This was reinforced by his near death experience upon first finding the cavern, and his subsequent carelessness that caused the destruction of the mural before he could complete its study. These events served to curb the impetuousness of youth and from then on he became more deliberate and considerate in the actions he took.
    d. His time in the Underdark. Flint, along with a few of the mine's workers, were kidnapped and imprisoned by drow slavers in an area known as the Underdark. With each trial and tribulation the group's bond grew, until Flint finally understood what it meant to have true companions, the sort one can depend on and trust implicitly. He's certain he'd never have survived the ordeal without them.

  • What values, morals, and/or philosophies does your character live by, and how are those beliefs demonstrated? What happens when they have to compromise what they believe in?
  • Flint, being an outsider in his own society, has built his own personal sense of justice. He's found that a rigid "code" tends to be wielded by oppressors as means to justify their own existence and the oppression of their "lessers". He also loathes any implication that things will always be the way they are and cannot be changed -- the world can always be bettered. He also believes one should never be cruel. Compromising in either of these beliefs would be allowing a cruel world to drag him down with it.

  • What is your character afraid of? How does avoiding or preventing these fears influence their actions and decisions?
  • Flint's greatest fear is giving in to a desire for vengeance. He has seen what a life motivated by revenge can do to a person, and seeks to walk a different path. Additionally his awkward manner and orcish features have led to many a misunderstanding, which motivates him to act and speak carefully to avoid frightening anyone. Also, spiders. Too many eyes, too many legs, unnatural creatures -- and these were his thoughts even before having spent time in the Underdark.

  • What goals does your character have right now? What do they want, and how do they go about getting it?
  • Flint's goal is to understand the rune magic he began learning about, and if he can, the events that led to him being whisked away to this new world. He is also curious about the new world around him considering how much it differs from his own, and will be very open to learning about it (and its history).
    Gameplay —
Areas of Interest / Brainstorming: I'm honestly not sure. I'm completely new to the world of DWRP and this is the first game I've participated in. So I'd be interested in going along with just about anything to participate and experience. Flint as a character does not have much interest in returning home and is more inclined to make a new home in the world he finds himself in. I would like to create a thread where he finds that the rune magic he uses can also be found on this world and he would spend time learning more magic and exploring what connection it has to this world and his own.

[With a deep breath, Flint finds himself staring at the post that's been stuck in draft mode for days. Realizing he hates everything he's written so far, he deletes it and starts again.]

To whom it may concern [Too formal, he thinks and starts again.]

Howdy [Too informal, he thinks and once again deletes the text from the screen.]

    Hello Everyone [An adequate compromise]

My name is Flint. As a recent arrival to this world, I find myself often lost as I explore the city. On my world, a dozen buildings constituted a metropolis, yet here there seems to be no end to them. To familiarize myself with the city and hopefully its people I was looking for individuals who might be interested in joining me on weekly walks through the city to enjoy its amenities with company. If anyone is interested or even just has a suggestion of what I should see in the city, please let me know.

    Flint Carsen
[Considering the post with a fretful frown, he finally decides to hit send.]
